How to use this calculator

  1. Pick a story from the 'Pick a story' list.
  2. Click the typing box and type the story exactly as shown — the clock starts on the first letter.
  3. Green letters are right, red letters are wrong. Take your time; stars reward careful typing.
  4. Finish the story to see your stars, words per minute, and how many letters you got right.
  5. Press 'Play again' to beat your score, or choose a new story.

The formula

Words per minute = ((letters typed ÷ 5) − mistakes) ÷ minutes. Stars: finish = 1 star; 85%+ letters right = 2 stars; 95%+ right and 10+ WPM = 3 stars.

Worked example

Type 125 letters in one minute with 5 mistakes: (125 ÷ 5) − 5 = 20 words per minute. Letters right = 120 ÷ 125 = 96%, which earns all 3 stars. These numbers are produced by the same scoring function the page uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this typing test good for beginners?

Yes. The stories use short, common words and simple sentences, and the letters are shown in a large font. Kids can see each letter turn green when they get it right, which makes learning to type feel like a game.

How do the stars work?

Finish a story to earn stars: 1 star for finishing, 2 stars if at least 85% of your letters are right, and 3 stars if at least 95% are right and you type at least 10 words per minute. Accuracy earns stars faster than raw speed.

What typing speed should a kid aim for?

It depends on age, but rough guides used by many teachers are about 10–15 WPM for grades 3–4 and 20–30 WPM by grade 6. The best goal is steady improvement with high accuracy — speed grows naturally once the right fingers find the right keys.

Does the test save my child's score?

No. Everything happens in your browser on this page. No score, name, or typed text is sent anywhere or stored.

Can my child take the test again?

As many times as they like. Press 'Play again' to retry the same story and beat the score, or pick a different story from the list.
